“My imagination took the place of having siblings. Many people would describe me as a child that lived in her own world.”

The Color Prjct

Visual Artist, Martinique Pates created The Color Project, as a platform to exhibit her creative work as well as explore the intersectionality of art, culture and fashion. Originally from the south suburbs of Chicago, she has spent most of her adult years between Baltimore, Philly and NYC. Inspired by the vast art scene on the East Coast, she became curious about her own talents. Now, a self-taught artist, writer/poet and style enthusiast she uses her creativity to re-envision her blackness and explore how visual art can enhance what it means to be free within a world where black people have no agency.

Martinique has earned a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Columbia College Chicago. Her work has been displayed at The Living Gallery in Brooklyn, NY; Maryland Arts Council in Maryland; Latela Curatorial in Washington, DC as well as NYC digital platform, Sand Castle Collective. In addition, she has been featured in Shoutout LA magazine and VoyageLA magazine.

“I can’t be a singular expression of myself, there’s too many parts, too many spaces, too many manifestations, too many lines, too many curves, too many troubles, too many journeys.” - Solange, When I get home
